Jonas Mekas' video "Letter from Greenpoint"

Jonas Mekas, born in 1922, is a Lithuanian filmmaker,
writer and curator who has often been called
"the godfather of American avant-garde cinema."
He was the founder of the Anthology Film Archive,
the Filmmakers' Cooperative and "Film Culture" magazine.
He was heavily involved with artists such as
Andy Warhol, Nico and Yoko Ono. He is best
known for his diary films, such as
"As I Was Moving Ahead, Occsaionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty,”
assembled by hand from an archive of
fifty years worth of recordings of his life.
Mekas grew up in a small farming community.
During the Second World War, he was held in
displaced persons camps before emigrating to the
United States in 1949. In "Letter from Greenpoint,"
made for the 2003 Venice Biennial's Utopia Station sub-exhibit,
Mekas discusses his unique views on utopia.

On the PhillySound site...

In the self promo department:

And I also read that article about Philly
being the "6th borough"...which it's not,
last I checked. The other weekend I was in NYC
and heard people talking about that article...
I think Philly's a great city, Boston on the other hand...
we're now down to one reading series here,
unless you count the mainstream
and academic bores (which I don't)
or the readings that go on inside people's houses....
In addition, we've had an exodus of poets leaving the B'ton area.
I've been criticized for dissing B'ton so I'll make my statement simple:

It sucks here. The emperor has no clothes. And I'm not from here.

Whew. I feel better already.
