Bennett: Black Abortions Would Lower Crime
Bennett, on his radio show, ``Morning in America,'' was answering a caller's question when he took issue with the hypothesis put forth in a recent book that one reason crime is down is that abortion is up.
``But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down,'' said Bennett, author of ``The Book of Virtues.''
Bennett was education secretary under President Reagan and director of drug control policy when Bush's father was president.
I amend my coat hanger sentence from previous post. What I meant to say was however, not as reprehensible or at all racist, but would be akin to screaming in an alley at 2 am...you must have heard this phrase, it's called:
WHAT???
and there are various narrations of said phrase, like: WHAT THE HELL? or my favorite: WHAT THE FUCK?
The following sentence reads: HOW COULD YOU... ... ...?
I'm telling you, Canada...I may be waxing nostalgic but I think Canada is a great country...
!@#&? did this happen?
John Roberts takes oath as chief justice
Democrats have no spine. ROBERTS IS UNQUALIFIED!!!!!
Gals, start saving your coathangers.
Leads me out of the house and in ONatural's coffeeshop in Somerville...despite the crying children, it's not so bad...I'm sitting on the big comfy couch...
Yes, I am looking for a job. I wouldn't be sitting here if I weren't...
I neglected to mention that two miles outside of Hartford CT are farms and fields. There are still farmers growing tomatoes and summer and fall squash and every other crop: peaches, peppers and pumpkins.
There are other crops Hartford was known for: guns and typewriters and insurance.
Communication or lack of.
One thing I noticed about Hartford coming in and going out was a big sandbar the size of a parking garage in the CT river...it was strange to see the water table so low...compared to...other cities that dwell a few feet under...
On this trip I saw the front pg of the Hartford Times (which no longer exists as a newspaper) of the 1957 flood bc as one should be aware, Hartford CT and other cities are built on a waterfront...
It's as if my family were un-endorsed archivists or the tact-less phrase: pack rats.
I walked around Hartford on Wednesday, went to the state library, went to a farmer's market, went to, or tried to go to the Wallace Stevens room but it seems that no one's heard of Wallace Stevens except for, well, poets. The guard didn't know what I was talking about.
The Hartford Public Library was being gutted but still some access, the Wadsworth Antheneum was showing "ye old masters" meaning "dutch paintings" and I saw a nice brownstone being shown - to rent or buy.
Another thing I noticed about Hartford; no where to go food shopping. Or any kind of shopping. It's not a mecca by any means.
I found a good indie coffee shop, tho there are no book stores (unless the one I am thinking of is still around), the bars are heterosexual meat markets, unhappy would not classify the word I saw on peoples faces, it's congested, it's segregated, it's suburban...it's...
Frederick Law Olmstead had a colleague of his design "the park." Bushnell Park.
It would be considered Hartford's "boston commons" or "central park" but...
There is a carousel, big shady trees, a pond, underutilized would be the kindest way of putting it...
I was walking around Hartford bt 10 am and 2 pm (minus the time I spent in the library, which was, historically speaking, quite grand - Hartford's City Hall is also not such a horrible place if one has to get a copy of a birth certificate) and I've never seen such a dirth of "individuals" coming and going in a city in well...a long time.
It's not a city, it's an urban planning nightmare. There's a new convention center and a new hotel on or near the CT river...I still await the enticement...or rather, what promotion...or social-economic research...
Bush used his powers to suspend a law that for 74 years has guaranteed a decent wage to construction workers in federal contracts. The suspension applies to more than 100 counties and parishes in the states hit by Katrina - indefinitely, for all contracts, whether or not they are meant to clean up and rebuild devastated areas.
The order cancels "prevailing wages," which assure that workers on federal jobs receive hourly pay akin to workers doing similar work in those areas. Prevailing wages in the Deep South states are barely above poverty: $9.55 an hour, for example, for a construction laborer in New Orleans.
Halliburton must be hiring...that's one web site I'd never visit...

Halliburton Subsidiary Gets Katrina Deal
By LOLITA C. BALDOR
Associated Press Writer
September 4, 2005, 4:58 PM EDT
WASHINGTON -- A Halliburton Co. subsidiary that has come under fire for its reconstruction work in Iraq has begun tapping a $500 million Navy contract to do emergency repairs at Gulf Coast naval and Marine facilities that were battered by Hurricane Katrina.
On other matters, people ask when I'm leaving B'ton...the answer: I don't know. My left hand - or I - suffer from a case of cubital nerve damage (similar to carpal tunnel) and I might need surgery so...I actually should not be on the computer at all...
...or move a box or for that matter, do the dishes...good thing I'm right handed...
Hastert says he doesn't want city to be bulldozed
Hastert later issued a statement saying he was not "advocating that the city be abandoned or relocated." But Louisiana Democrats were incensed. Gov. Kathleen Blanco demanded an apology. "To kick us when we're down and destroy hope, when hope is the only thing we have left," she said, "is absolutely unthinkable for a leader in his position."
His death ends a career during which Rehnquist oversaw the court's conservative shift, presided over an impeachment trial and helped decide a presidential election.
Two open spots on the court, friends.
